Reading Survey Analysis and Reflection

 Mõrena,

Attached is a slideshow of my findings of the Reading Survey I adapted and carried out in my ILE space with Y3 & 4 students. It was very interesting to see this information presented in one place, thoughts and next steps are noted on each slide.

I am curious to see what others think!

  1. Koia kei a koe Jasmine, good on you! This is a detailed analysis of the data you gathered. I know we discussed this at length, as we found the responses so interesting. You've developed some good questions, and considered next steps in finding either; 1) solutions, or 2) further processes you need to go through to investigate more deeply.
It would be interesting to see if these students' views change after a term of learning, or possibly after some of your actions might have had chance to impact them. Have you decided which are your immediate goals and what might be longer term aims?
I'd also like to acknowledge the fact that you did this survey across the ILE you work in and in the Y4 students in the Senior syndicate; thus not just looking to benefit your Reading students, but all those at this Y3/4 level. Thanks for your enthusiasm in filtering your own learning outwards to support your colleagues.

    1. Talofa lava Helen. I have decided that supporting students to choose appropriate and fun books to read for enjoyment in the class Library session as well as selecting specific students to recieve a duffy award will be immediate next steps. Later on in the year looking into intertwining some literacy and visual art into the curriculum based around a popular series will be something I aim for, and seek support from others to do this. Combined with speaking to the team about poetry and how to make it more engaging or targetting the LIs and SC that reading those poems reach via a different resource or material will be longer term goals.

  2. Kia ora Jasmine,
You have some interesting results from the survey for your class. I found it especially intriguing to see you obtained similar results to our class in terms of those learners who enjoyed reading and self efficacy. It would possibly mean there is a link between the two. I think you have come up with some very riveting questions for your investigation which will be interesting to follow.

    Kia pai to ra.

Thank you for sharing your comprehensive analysis of Te Ano Ako’s Reading Profiles Survey! You have richly ‘mined’ the data for further investigation (e.g. conversations with learners) and with positive avenues for inquiry into next steps.

I agree, it is certainly reassuring that most learners report an enjoyment of reading: a positive reading culture from which to build ambitious outcomes. It would be interesting to explore the relationship between achievement, self-efficacy and access to texts for the four learners who are yet to rate themselves 3 or 4 on the enjoyment scale. I particularly like your probing questions on slide 4 towards forming tentative hypotheses for this ‘target group’. Like you I am wondering how access to “good fit” books may factor into these data for the four. Do you have any open lines of communication with these particular whanau?

Looking at the profiles emerging around texts the learners are reading most, I’m also thinking there is opportunity for introducing further challenge to their ‘diet’ (whilst still supporting enjoyment of genres like humor, and more sophisticated picture books). I would be really interested in your next steps towards extending learners’ fiction tastes and length in a way that balances enjoyment with extension.

You have really set your learners up for further reading for enjoyment success through this important analysis work. Have you shared any of the data with them at this point. Do you plan any co-inquiry and goal setting with them?

I too look forward to further discussion in our break out and to picking up these threads with others.

    1. Talofa lava Naomi, I agree - the link between self efficacy and access to texts is an interesting one. We are due to have whānau on site tomorrow so I am hoping those lines will become more open after that. We often look into things together that we are not sure about but I am interested in setting co-inquiry and goal setting up with them further down the line. Thanks for your detailed comment!
